Product Spotlight

ChemSpec chose to focus on processing equipment for this Product Spot- light (in lieu of a specific product). The new equipment in the Dickson facility results in significantly improved 325 fine sieve mesh product, and we are highlighting it because of its advantages versus other products - these ad- vantages include:

 ● Pneumatic conveying - reducing hard  particles allowing for  optimal durability

 ● State-of-the-art cartridge filters - reducing contaminants

 ● Product Ranges of:  High purity, treated, high & low surface area, USP, and pellets

ZOCHEM’s Director of Technology, John Stourac, explains:

Poor quality of Zinc Oxide 325 mesh results in oversize contamination can cause inclusions in rubber, tears in thin rubber/seals, and surface voids/holes on polished/ground rubber surfaces. In paint and coating, poor 325 mesh quality allows for low performing Hegman grind and creates visual particulates in sprays and thin film finishes. In life science applications, it causes grit in cosmetic foundations and zinc oxide ointments. In chemicals, poor 325’s cause holes in thin film plastic or become visual particulate inclusions. We are very proud of our efforts to make a significant improvement in zinc oxide quality and set a global benchmark.

Ed Smith, ZOCHEM’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing adds that, “since our Zinc Oxide 325 benefits are designed in all of our grades, we have no added cost to our customers for this quality improvement in processing.”

ChemSpec, Ltd. Sourcing Report

Market-Updates.png

It's top priority to keep you updated on any issues that may affect your bottom line.

ChemSpec realizes the importance of keeping our customers informed on issues in chemical distribution.  Our Vice President of Operations, Jon Sias, is constantly working to keep apprised of any issues relating to product availability and deliveries.

China Sourcing Update - from Jon Sias

As of mid-October, the tight supply of certain chemicals from China continues.  Following is a report from the ChemSpec sourcing team that details our view of the situation and future outlook:

The Chinese Government continues to send safety inspectors regularly to manufacturing plants.  Manufacturers continue to be shut down or told production has to be limited as the country wide push for reducing pollution continues.  Rubber raw material manufacturing continues to be a large culprit of water pollution, and there does not seem to be a clear path forward at this time.  As a result, many raw material producers are limited, which in turn limits supply.  The demand is greater, causing pricing to stay on the rise.

Most producers in Shandong and Hebei have been told to stop or limit production in the past month.  Also, pollution has been reduced in anticipation of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) starting on Oct 18, 2017 in Beijing.  A nearby area where production is limited due to this event is Tianjin, home to many major rubber chemical plants.  It is hopeful that there may be come clarity into the future of China after this event, but we have not seen any direction yet.  While many manufacturers are left in limbo of not knowing how much and how long they will stay open, the market will continue to be tight and uncertain.  We think this will continue well into the first quarter of 2018.  Many smaller players are or will be exiting production and a handful of larger manufacturers will remain.

ChemSpec will continue to carry larger safety stock beyond the normal 45-60 days we do for our customers for products which are impacted from China.  The list of products is large as many downstream products have some raw material starting in China.  Our recommendation is for customers to plan ahead and make sure they have stock secured.  We continue to do our best negotiating pricing when applicable, but our main concern and priority right now is having stock for our customers that are counting on us.

For more specifics, products which we are seeing a shortage are common accelerators and antioxidants as follows:CBS, MBS, MBT , MBTS, DPG, DOTG, TMTD, 6PPD, IPPD, CTPI.  The provinces in China that are experiencing these limits or stops in operations are:  Shandong, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Henan, Zhejiang, Hebei, Jiangxi, and Sanxi.

ChemSpec works with excellent manufacturers in China.  Our “eyes and ears” on the ground in China at all times, is Sichuan HuaFaMei.  As our agent, they keep us continually updated and regularly visit the plants to stay on top of developing situations and outlooks.

We are also thankful to work exclusively with manufacturers like Jingzhou Jianghan Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. (JHSi), a large producer of silane coupling agents.  JHSi does a wonderful job of keeping the US market supplied with product at a time when raw materials have become short and/or more expensive.  They are experiencing increases in the raw materials which go into making these products, leading to cost increases for Q4 2017 and into 2018.  JHSi has made a significant investment in their plant recently regarding safety and waste water, feeling very confident they will have no issues operating.  Their most recent expansion has taken them to be one of the largest silane producers in the world.

ChemSpec Enhances Quality Department with Addition of FTIR Equipment

When you talk about differentiation, you think of ChemSpec, Ltd.  Why?  Because the team at ChemSpec continues to find ways to bring value to their customers versus the competition.  Due to our significant sales growth, ChemSpec’s President and CEO, Dave Moreland, wanted another way to bring value to the market place with a more diversely trained technical department.  Quality and ISO Manager, M. Scho Wolers, has been a significant part of ChemSpec’s growth providing our sales teams with the technical information needed to bring products to our customers.

Most recently, Scho teamed up with ACE Products and Consulting to develop an exclusive lab for utilizing FTIR equipment for chemical analysis.  Scho explains:  “Investing in the FTIR equipment means many opportunities for our customers.  This equipment will allow us to test product that has arrived from our suppliers, provide IR curve reports to our customers in a timely fashion, and the ability to work on new product development for customers who are leaning on our technical guidance.”

The FTIR equipment is an infrared spectroscopy that provides an easier way to identify the presence of certain functional groups in a molecule for organic chemistry.  In addition, the analysis can also use the unique collection of absorption bands to confirm the identity of a pure compound or to detect the presence of specific impurities.

Along with the enhancement of ChemSpec’s quality department with the FTIR equipment, Scho is also managing our annual ISO and NACD membership.

ISO CERTIFICATION
ChemSpec is an ISO certified (through Perry Johnson Registrars & ANAB Accredidation) chemical distributor with an in-house quality control department managed by Scho.  Dave Moreland explains:  “By having Scho manage our day-to-day requirements for ISO certification, we are able to continue to provide our customers with quality products from quality suppliers.”  The ISO certificate is available on our website for review or download.

NACD MEMBERSHIP
ChemSpec is a candidate for membership with the National Association of Chemical Distributors.  We are looking forward to the rewards and benefits the NACD brings enabling us to strengthen our current and future partnerships and our sustainability practices.

Cyber Attack Hits Maersk Line

Reuters (Teis Jensen) reported late last week that Maersk Line, Danish-owned and the world’s largest container shipper, stated its computer systems were hit by the global Petya cyber-attack, causing problems with processing orders and delaying cargo shipments.

Reuters reported the cyber-attack has disrupted businesses world-wide and has created congestion in 76 ports; including the United States, India, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Reuters continues to communicate that the impact is affecting vessels or cargo loaded from June 26 through June 28 2017.  They have made alternate changes to process orders manually and communicating with customers daily.   The good news is that no data has been lost and Maersk has been working to resume normal operations quickly to all of the ports that have been affected.

ChemSpec’s VP of Operations, Jon Sias, is on top of communications with suppliers who are affected by this delay and we are committed to keeping all of our customers informed of any new outcomes.  Should you have any concerns, please feel free to contact our customer service department toll-free at:  800.200.4753 or via email:  orders@chemspecltd.com.

ChemSpec Mexico Celebrating 1 Year Anniversary

ChemSpec's subsidiary, CHEMSPEC MÉXICO, S. DE RL DE C.V., was formed in August 2016 to serve the rapid growth of automotive manufacturing in México, specifically in the central states−often referred to as the “automotive/rubber triangle” region. ChemSpec México is strategically based in Querétaro, with additional warehousing and logistics business support in nearby Laredo, TX.

A management-owned distributor of specialty chemical additives and specialty elastomers for many polymer compounding and cosmetic ingredient markets, ChemSpec México focuses on providing sales and technical support to the elastomer compounding industry−notably for tire and technical rubber production in the region. Additionally, they also support other Mexican “C.A.S.E.” (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, Elastomer, and Plastics) manufacturing segments.
According to Dave Moreland, ChemSpec’s President,

“Our move into Mexico a year ago aligned with Safic-Alcan’s overall strategy of growing its presence across the NAFTA Region. Additionally, ChemSpec has always done its best to follow market trends so that we can better service our customer-base. Over the past year, customers have responded positively to our support of having our employees ‘on the ground’ providing them with more flexibility logistically−ultimately enabling ChemSpec to support their Mexico-based customers while continuing to promote overall business growth.”

ChemSpec México’s Sales & Marketing Manager, Manuel Cortés, has been successful in the past year, establishing the brand presence of ChemSpec México by providing formulators in the growing region with value-driven solutions.
